Celebrate ancestral richness at the 19th Anniversary of the Emberá Quera Community!

The vibrant Emberá Quera Community is preparing to commemorate its ’19th anniversary’ with a cultural event that promises to be a true tribute to its roots, traditions, and resilience.

On Sunday, January 18, 2026, from 9:00 a.m., the community opens its doors to national and international visitors for a day filled with ancestral gastronomy, traditional games, cultural encounters, and artistic expressions that invite you to learn about and value the Emberá worldview.

The event, which will take place at the community facilities of Quera, will feature a program designed to highlight the cultural legacy of the Emberá people. Featured activities include:

• Traditional Gastronomy: Tasting of typical dishes such as Bodochi, “rice bun, wrapped in bijao leaf, and drinks based on tropical fruits and Chinango (strong Chicha).
• Ancestral Games: Active participation in traditional dynamics such as archery, log races, and tug of war that teach community values and connection with nature.
• Cultural Encounters: Dialogues between wise elders, community leaders, and visitors about the history, language, spirituality, and current challenges of the Emberá people.
• Handicrafts and Community Market: Exhibition and sale of unique pieces made with beads, natural fibers, and seeds, made by the hands of artisans from the community.
• Traditional Dances and Dances: Musical presentations that narrate Emberá myths, legends, and experiences through movement and word.

This anniversary not only celebrates 19 years of community organization but also reaffirms the Emberá Quera Community’s commitment to preserving its cultural identity, protecting the territory, and strengthening responsible community tourism.

Admission is free and open to the public! Attendees are invited to come with respect, curiosity, and a spirit of learning to live an authentic and transformative experience.

General Assembly of Emberá Querá: Unanimous Re-election of the Noko for the 2025–2030 Term

On May 1st, 2025, the Emberá Querá community held its General Assembly—an essential event for practicing internal democracy and exercising the right to self-determination as an Indigenous people. During this important gathering, the community selected its traditional authorities for the 2025–2030 period.  Remaining under the leadership of Elvin Flaco ( I Noko), Atilano Flaco S (II Noko), Climaco Dogirama (Fiscal), Frigelio Achito (Vocal), Militza Flaco ( Tesorera) y Yohana Dogirama ( Secretaria).

In a show of unity and collective agreement, community members unanimously re-elected the current Noko (traditional leader), recognizing his continued commitment, leadership, and dedication to the well-being of the community and the preservation of Emberá culture.

The General Assembly not only reaffirms our ancestral traditions and values, but also strengthens our community organization and shared vision for a sustainable future rooted in our identity.
